hey,
never sure how to break the fourth wall on here, but there’s some stuff coming up in October that you – my dear reader – might want to know about. regular programming will continue as scheduled, so expect a story tomorrow (and, if you’re among those that have blessed me with your patronage, another on the 15th), but there will be something irregular the day after, and continuing throughout the Halloween month: the first of fifteen Minor Horrors – impressionistic reviews of/meditations on some obscure, overlooked, or otherwise seldom-discussed horror films that I think are interesting. this won’t be a countdown, or a best-of, or an attempt at an “alternative” canon, just some very non-definitive, non-exhaustive writing on some movies I felt were worth writing about. a few of these movies I think are truly great, a few I think are pretty dull, and most fall somewhere in the middle; what unites them is a shared lack of interest in being anything other than exactly what they are, and a shared unlikelihood that anyone other me will devote this sort of attention to them this season – that is, you’re probably not going to read about any of these on any listicles using the phrase “Spooky Season”.
the way this is going to work is I’ll be publishing a new Minor Horror every other day, starting on the 2nd and continuing through the 30th – I haven’t decided exactly how I’m doing this yet, but some of these will be paywalled, probably about half, so if this sounds like something you’re interested in, and you’re not subscribed already, I would encourage you to do so now and ensure you don’t miss out on anything. it’s only $5 and you can always cancel at any time. just saying.
also, I recognize this means a lot more Garden Scenery than normal in your inbox – this is an experiment, so if you think it’s too much, feel free to let me know. if people seem to like this, I’ll keep doing things like this; if they don’t, I won’t. Garden Scenery is an outlet for my writing and a way to keep myself productive, but I do care whether the stuff I publish here is actually being read (I mean, obviously, I’m trying to make money off of it), so if something doesn’t work, or isn’t what people are looking for, I want to know. or if it is, even better.
anyway, thank you for your time! more to come very soon.
benedictions,
david
